KIDNEY CANCER PATIENTS IN NATIONAL PROTEST TO “N I C E” HQ

On Wednesday 27th August, a group of kidney cancer patients and their supporters from all over the Country will be travelling to the NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) HQ at 71 High Holborn, London.

At noon they will try to deliver letters of protest to the Chief Executive, Mr Andrew Dillon, asking him to reverse the recent decision which will deny them the right to have the best available treatment for their kidney cancer, prescribed for them on the NHS.

Kidney cancer patients will be sentenced to a premature death by a system, which patients, the public, and leading clinicians from all over the Country believe to be seriously flawed and morally corrupt. Unlike many other cancers there is no alternative effective treatment.

On Thursday 7th August, NICE issued draft guidance that will prevent Oncologists prescribing Avastin, Nexavar, Sutent or Torisel to their patients. One of these drugs, Sutent (Sunitinib) is the gold standard treatment for kidney cancer and prescribed throughout the world. All kidney cancer specialists strongly support the use of Sutent as the most effective treatment available.

Kidney Cancer is classed as a rare cancer and without these drugs cancer patients will be left with no real effective treatment. We have been abandoned by the NHS.

Patients are angry and frightened and do not understand the process, we believe these life and death decisions are carried out behind closed doors. The NICE process is not transparent, the language used is incomprehensible to most people and we do not understand how the very high cost figures appear to have been arrived at. Patients maintain the NICE appraisal does not take into account the latest clinical trials evidence confirming much longer survival rates, and does not include the special discounts offered to the Department of Health by the drug companies.

Patients have been further frustrated in particular by the way the news was broken when MP’s were away on holiday, they have little time to appeal and the process to appeal is deliberately confusing and awkward.

We are pleased to announce that representatives of the James Whale Fund for Kidney Cancer, and representatives from other kidney cancer charities will be in London to meet us on the day.

WE ALL HAVE A RIGHT TO LIFE!
