Living with cancer is hard enough. But the impact on your finances can make it even harder. Macmillan Cancer Support can help. Just contact them, and they’ll tell you what financial assistance could be available to you
If you’re faced with a serious family shock such as a parent, partner or sibling being diagnosed with cancer, you probably wouldn’t give a second thought to the financial implications. Chances are, family members will pull together to provide a solid emotional support network to help everyone cope and continue as normally as possible with their daily lives.
However, living with cancer is not only tough emotionally, but the cost of care and treatment and lifestyle changes can also place significant financial strain on your wallet.
As well as offering world-class care and counselling, Macmillan Cancer Support provides many forms of invaluable financial advice for the 1.2m people currently living with the disease. This leaves patients, relatives and friends alike free to concentrate their energy on fighting their illness and taking care of their loved ones.
The benefits system can appear to be a confusing process, but the charity provides comprehensive literature and over 80 benefits advisers dotted throughout the country to expertly guide you.
Once you’re aware of what areas you may be eligible for support in and have established a daily routine, you can then see exactly what type of economic help you need along the way. A wide-ranging list of options takes care of the more obvious costs, such as paying for prescriptions, wigs and fabric supports. It also helps you keep on top of less palpable costs, such as paying for a particular diet, transport to and from hospital, and buying new clothes after weight loss or gain.
If you have children, making sure they are cared for properly will be a huge concern, and the cost of uniforms and meals will only add to your worries.
